WHERE IS FUKUOKA

Fukuoka is the Gateway to Asia.

The prefecture of Fukuoka is located on the northern tip of Kyushu island and on the western side of Japan. Being geographically close to the Korean peninsula, Fukuoka has many historical links to the mainland. For this reason, Fukuoka is known as the "Gateway to Asia". Today, Fukuoka continues to be active in international exchanges with Asian countries.

Fukuoka is easily accessible by public transport and has established links with key cities in the Asia Pacific and within Japan. To reach Fukuoka by air, it takes only 1h 30m from Tokyo, 1h 10 min from Seoul, 1h 30min from Shanghai and 2h 30min from Taipei.

With about 17,000 international students, Fukuoka has the third highest number of international students in Japan, after Tokyo and Osaka. 
Associations of international students can be found at both the national and local level, and also within schools. With such networks, you can easily make friends and seek advice from seniors. There are also cultural events that are offered free-of-charge to international students and support groups on job hunting etc.

Low cost of living
The cost of living here is only 60% that of Tokyo. Life is easier when housing is affordable. Cheap and delicious food abounds too—from Japanese food like ramen, udon, yakitori, to fresh fruits and vegetables. Fee waivers and scholarships for international students are available in universities.

In Fukuoka, you can enjoy the perks of living in a city—with plenty of opportunies to eat and shop—while being close to the mountains and the seaside at the same time!
Getting around Fukuoka is easy. The local bus and train services are comprehensive. You only need 10 minutes to reach the city center from the airport by subway. Fukuoka is well-connected by air and rail, including the shinkansen, so taking a holiday outside Fukuoka is never a chore. With the annual average temperature at 17?C, the weather in Fukuoka is pleasant all year round.

Good selection of schools
57 universities and junior college, 161 vocational schools* and numerous language schools—With that many schools in Fukuoka, you can definitely find one that suits you. There is also a wide variety of courses on offer. Those interested in science and technical majors at the graduate level, and environment- and IT-related majors at the undergraduate level are spoilt for choice. Four universities in Fukuoka also offer medicine.
* Known officially as "specialized training colleges", these schools offer courses that are practical and vocational in nature.
