Located approximately 60 km offshore of Kyushu, Yakushima is the only World Heritage in Kyushu. Boasting Mt. Miyanoura, the tallest mountain in Kyushu, the natural environment of the island varies significantly place to place, which is shown by the wide variety of vegetation present, ranging from subtropical flowers to subarctic plants. The island’s weather is so rainy that it is even described as “35 rainy days in a month.” Very unique animal species, such as Yaku Japanese monkeys and Yaku shika deer, and Yaku Japanese cedars over 1,000 years old, can be observed exclusively on the island.
