Profile

Kyushu University offers well-developed Japanese-language education programs for international students focusing on their future after graduation.

Class scenery

Kyushu University, founded in 1911, is the fourth-oldest imperial university in Japan. As of 2008, with 11 undergraduate schools and 18 graduate schools, the University is one of Japan’s leading universities. Since its establishment, Kyushu University has produced 120,000 graduates and 70,000 postgraduates, who have been contributing to the development of Japan. Since 2005, the University has been in the process of relocating to its new campus. Looking towards the completion of relocation in 2011, the centennial of the University’s founding, Kyushu University reaffirms its determination to achieve even greater advances as an international center of education and research.
International students enrolled at Kyushu University currently number about 1,500, the 9th highest among universities in Japan. This high level is partly due to one of the University’s highly valued features: well-developed supplementary programs in the Japanese language for international students. Such programs include Japanese-language education programs offered at various levels of proficiency and by fields of skills — comprehensive Japanese language, kanji, conversation, reading and writing skills. The University also provides classes in business Japanese for international students wishing to work in Japan after graduation.
Many international students who studied at Kyushu University are active as leaders in politics, government and academia in their home countries.

International student-friendly university with an environment that
supports international students

Yuriko Obata, International Student Exchange Division

One of our University’s greatest strengths is the fact that not only International Student Section members, but also staff in charge of international students in the Student Affairs Sections of individual schools, give close support to international students. International students, therefore, can easily access various services provided by those sections. We also have a system in which each international student, immediately after coming to Japan, is assigned one Japanese student of the University as a tutor. These tutors give strong support to international students in their daily lives and studies. In addition, our University is making campus-wide efforts to ensure that international students live a fulfilling student life in Japan, for example by providing various opportunities for international students to deepen communication not only with those who study and work at the University, but also with local residents.
