Profile
On a campus with a homelike atmosphere, the University’s students enjoy an excellent career education of great value for the future.

The predecessor of Fukuoka Women’s University (FWU) was Japan’s first public women’s college, established in 1923. Since its founding, with an 85-year history in education for women, the University has continued to assist women in playing active roles in society. Additionally, in 2007, FWU started the “Career Support Program,” which promotes the formation of a gender-equal society. The program features a wide range of courses, not only those useful for finding employment and obtaining various licenses and qualifications, but also those that allow women to shape their careers and change their lives.
Currently, the University has two faculties, the Faculty of Literature and the Faculty of Human Environmental Science, and a total of five departments. In particular, the Department of Nutrition and Food Science is one of FWU’s most popular departments, partly because few other universities have similar departments in Fukuoka Prefecture. The Department provides a valuable opportunity for students who wish to study nutrition and food science.
FWU employs a homeroom system, which is uncommon in Japanese universities. The small size of each homeroom class (30 to 45 students) enables students to communicate more easily with their homeroom teachers and classmates. It also encourages international students to be active as homeroom class members, for example in working as class representatives and taking part in university events such as athletic meets and campus festivals. Engaging in various campus activities together with Japanese students, FWU’s international students fully enjoy their university life in Japan.

In addition to our strong selling point, small-group instruction and class-based teacher assignments, we have an on-campus tutoring system. A Japanese student is assigned to each international student to provide all necessary support, from schoolwork to everyday life. The International Center, established in October, 2006, has promoted interaction with overseas universities as well as boosting students’ awareness of the importance to communicate with international students on campus. I promise that you will feel at home in this environment.
